AHU LAB | TTU
ARCHITECTURAL HUMANITIES & URBANISM
The AHU_Lab (Architectural Humanities and Urbanism) is a research hub dedicated to the in-depth exploration of architectural humanities and critical urban studies. In our rapidly urbanizing world, probing sustainable architectural practices and understanding urban dynamics is more than academic—it's essential. Architectural humanities offer insights into the intricate relationship between architecture and societal contexts, while critical urban studies give us tools to examine the multifaceted aspects of urbanization. AHU_Lab emphasizes the need to merge knowledge from these domains, integrating theoretical perspectives with practical interventions. AHU_Lab establishes interdisciplinary connections between architecture, urbanism, and culture while shedding light on the influences of global urbanization and sustainable development. By promoting partnerships with national and international academic institutions, universities, research centers, and architectural organizations, AHU_Lab stands as a vanguard for promoting inclusive, multi-disciplinary, and sustainable urban dialogues.
Architectural Humanities
This discipline forms a core pillar of AHU_Lab's research agenda. Architectural humanities encompass the study of architecture in its historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts. AHU_Lab aims to comprehend how social, cultural, historical, and ethical dimensions influence and have an impact on architectural forms and spaces by exploring architectural design and practice through a humanistic lens. This focus includes the study of architectural history, theory, criticism, and the role of architecture in shaping human experiences and societal development.
Industrial Heritage
The addition of Industrial Heritage to AHU_Lab’s disciplinary focuses brings an important dimension to studying and preserving the legacy of industrial architecture and sites. This field involves understanding the historical significance of industrial buildings and complexes, as well as their cultural and architectural value. It encompasses the adaptive reuse of industrial structures, conservation practices, and the integration of these heritage sites into contemporary urban contexts. By studying industrial heritage, AHU_Lab contributes to the discourse on how former industrial spaces can be transformed and repurposed for modern uses while preserving their historical and cultural essence.
Critical Urban Studies
Critical Urban Studies at AHU_Lab investigates the complex dynamics of urbanization and the socio-spatial development of cities. This discipline emphasizes understanding the processes and patterns that shape urban environments, including urban planning, policy, and governance. It deals with critical issues such as urban inequality, gentrification, migration, urban ecology, and the impact of globalization on cities. The lab approaches these topics critically, examining the power structures, political economy, and social relations that define urban life. By integrating perspectives from sociology, geography, and environmental studies, AHU_Lab seeks to contribute to sustainable and equitable urban development.
Graduate Student Research Support Award Recognizes Sadaf Alikhani's Multidisciplinary Achievement
Dr. Asma Mehan presented her paper “Exploring the Duality of Digital Doubles in Urban Design and Pedagogy” at AI & Cities 2024 – Digital Double: Situating and Troubling AI Technologies for Architectural Reconstruction and Urban Simulation. Join us in Rome at the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History for a dynamic program featuring 12 excellent contributions and lectures.
Don’t miss the Open Workshop on Friday afternoon (prior registration required).
Hosted by the University of Zurich (Digital Visual Studies), Bibliotheca Hertziana, and ETH Zurich (Future Cities Laboratory).
At TECH+ Dallas, Dr. Asma Mehan had the opportunity to offer insights into my cutting-edge academic research, sharing climate-focused tools and innovative approaches for sustainability and resilience in the AEC industry, driving forward new possibilities in design.
Check out the summary of the key discussions & innovations shared by AEC technology leaders at the most recent TECH+ conference in Dallas!
Join us this coming Tuesday at 6 pm in the Student Union Building when we’ll be hosting our annual Alumni College event. Alumni College showcases work by TTU faculty who have received fellowships from the Humanities Center in the past year.
We’ll have two rounds of academic presentations in the Lubbock Room and the Red Raider Lounge (both on the first floor) before we adjourn to the Mesa Room upstairs for a reception.
Join us on Monday, October 7th, for the third event of our 2024-2025 lecture series titled, “M U L T I V A L E N T.”
M U L T I V A L E N T refers to the ability of architecture to address a multitude of values and meanings from climates, cultures, ecologies, and design intents.
Next week’s lecture, titled “HYBRID URBAN FACTORY,” will be led by NINA RAPPAPORT at 3:30 PM CT in the Gallery on the ground floor of the Huckabee College of Architecture.
